Heritage Repointing Ballarat
Repointing old brickwork in Ballarat is mostly a question of what goes into the joint. The Heritage Council of Victoria's technical code (June 2020) says modern Portland cement-based mortars are incompatible with lime mortars and with many of the masonry materials used in older buildings. Describe the wall and your enquiry goes to one local provider, who inspects it and quotes in writing. Ask what the mortar will be, which tool takes the old mortar out, how the new work is protected, and whether the building needs a permit.
Thanks — we have your enquiry. Someone will be in touch shortly. Prefer to talk now? Call (03) 9122 8610.
- Each enquiry goes to one independent provider for Ballarat, not to a list of firms that all ring you.
- We do not work on walls. The provider inspects, then names the price.
- Every call opens with a notice that it may be recorded.

Before you get a quote
Four things to know first
- The mortar is the first question The Heritage Council of Victoria's technical code of June 2020 says modern Portland cement-based mortars are incompatible with lime mortars and with many of the masonry materials used in older buildings. Ask what goes into the joint, and why.
- How the old mortar comes out matters The same code asks for joints raked or cut out to 2.5 times the joint width, at least 20 mm deep, and says angle grinders and disc cutters are not acceptable where oscillating blade tools work.
- Winter changes the job The code lists work below 5°C or above 30°C as unacceptable unless misting keeps the humidity up, and asks for four weeks of protection for new work. Ballarat's average overnight low is under 5°C from June to September.
- A precinct name does not decide a permit Whether a permit applies depends on the property. The City of Ballarat employs full-time Heritage Advisors who can guide repair and restoration works.
Three steps
From enquiry to quote
- Tell us about the wall The building, which walls, and what the joints look like.
- It is passed on Your enquiry goes to one independent local provider covering Ballarat. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
- A provider inspects and quotes The provider looks at the wall and prices the work in writing. The price is theirs to set.
Heritage Repointing across Ballarat
Ballarat winters are part of the question before any joint is raked. The Bureau of Meteorology's table for Ballarat Aerodrome gives an average overnight low of 3.2 °C in July (read 6 October 2026), and the code lists work below 5°C as an unacceptable condition unless misting keeps the humidity up. A quote that does not say when the work is done and how it is protected has left that out. The weather page has the monthly figures, and four older parts of the city and its surrounds have a page each: Buninyong, Bakery Hill, Learmonth and Soldiers Hill.
